In the Deep.
For this project we were tasked with creating textiles out of unconventional materials and turning those original textiles into a complete look, based on an inspiration taken from nature.
In the Deep was Heavily inspired by octopuses; the corset and the VHS tapes are made to mimic the look of an octopus' tentacles.
Shorts
The shorts were created from smooth trash bags being quilted with textured trash bags. They have curled VHS tapes attached at the hem by melting them together, and six turquoise "suckers" made from snaps on a plastic bag.
Bralette
This bralette was created by weaving cassette tapes on a hand-made loom in the shape of the pattern piece. The ties at the neck and back are made from braiding and curling the cassette tapes, and have snaps at the ends to connect each side.
Corset
This corset was created primarily from the inner tubes of bike tires. They were stuffed with newspaper and stiff wire to give shape, then hand-stitched together. After that, they were roughed up with sandpaper and spray painted to give an even more textured look. Bike chain was also painted and stitched on to the top as a harness for added stability.
Arm Bands
These arm bands were made from trash bags around an elastic band, with curled VHS tapes melted to the bottoms.
