Knit Design

This project was created on the SHIMA-SEIKI SDS-ONE APEX software.

For this project, I used the APEX software to create a printed, thigh-high sock design that has a built-in component that acts as a knee brace or compression sleeve around the knee.

My primary inspiration comes from a growing push for accessibility and sustainability in the textile industry, as well as new innovations in textile technology that allow 360 degree sock printing, rather than flatbed sock printing.

According to Fashion Snoops, graphic tights and tall socks are both projected to be trending during the FW 22/23 season. Botanical prints are also forecasted for intimates and lougewear.

The target market for these stockings is a person of any gender who enjoys wearing lingerie or forms of alternative fashion, such as rave fashion. Additionally, this person may be looking for extra support due to mobility issues, or may be looking for extra support while being out and on their feet all day.

These socks would be created on demand, rather than in large quantities, and could be ordered online directly from the brand. When created on demand, there is also a larger range of sizes that can be produced.

After some fiber research, I decided I would use a 95% bamboo 5% spandex blend. Research shows bamboo fibers can be as soft as viscose, and have inherent moisture-wicking, odor-absorbent, and antimicrobial properties. Bamboo Fibers are also known to be stronger than cotton fibers. The socks would be knitted on a very fine gauge machine for best wearing quality, and will knit on 2 ends in rib structures to provide extra strength and compression.

Each colorway here is shown flat with knit structures included. The thigh and knee areas both have a 2x2 rib, as they need more stretch while compressing over a larger area, and the center of the knee area has a circle of single jersey where the knee cap goes to give the same effect that a compression knee brace would have to hold the knee cap in place. The arch of the foot has a strip of 1x1 rib for better compression and arch support over a smaller area.
